We’re Taking a Pause

We are going to be taking a pause from this weeks Wednesday’s Rally Eye Candy and Saturday’s Cool Rally Car of the Week. With what time I have had to look at rally pictures and videos this week, which was very little; I didn’t find anything to use. Plus I have been very busy trying to get all my work done this week, while preparing to run this weekend’s No Alibi Rally, so I can run the rally with the piece of mind that everything is done. We are going to be running in the Equipped Class for the first time using the Richta Rally App for our Calculations. We are very excited to see how this all works out.

We’ll get back on schedule next Wednesday 6/6/12 with “Wednesday’s Rally Eye Candy”. And if nothing else I am sure I will have some good pictures and videos to share next week.

Cool Rally Car of the Week – 5/26/12

When I put out the call on Twitter for Cool Rally Car submissions for this week, I said:

“Anybody want to show off their Cool Rally Car? Send them in … by the way, all Rally Cars are cool!”

I got the following response from @ToyOder (Team #28 for the 2010 BABE Rally):

“Not ALL! Most BABE rally cars have 2×60 A/C! :)

Well here it is … Cool Rally Car of the Week: “Tom Celica”

“Tom Celica” from 2010 Babe Rally, Team #28

The Babe Rally (Big Apple 2 Big Easy) is a “motoring experience” that involves purchasing a $500 car and filling it with your friends and family then “chugging across — at least — 1,500 miles of pure American highways and byways”.

How would you like YOUR CAR to be the “Cool Rally Car of the Week”!

“Cool Rally Car of the Week” is your chance to show off your Rally car. We are looking for your Stage Rally Car, RallyCross Car, Road Rally Car or your Vintage/Collector Car.

All we ask for submission is at least one picture of your cool car. Whether is be a $300 POS you love or a cherished high $ beauty (and everything in between; including project cars). If you wish to send additional pictures, videos, information about your car, yourself, how long you have been rallying, what types of rally you do, clubs which you belong, etc., that would be appreciated as well.

Email your picture(s) and/or video(s) to: editor@dirtyconesandcheckpoints.com (use the Subject Line: “Cool Rally Car of the Week”).

Should we not have any submissions for the week, I’ll find a cool car to use in the feature, but I would prefer to use readers cars for the feature.

SMSCC’s 2012 Spring Classic

On May 12, 2012 the Santa Monica Sports Car Club hosted The 2012 Spring Classic Road Rally. It was billed on the pre-event flyer as:

An SCCA Regional Tour RoadRally. Rallymaster Patrick Strong brings you a fun-to-drive, trap-free
TSD rally that will feature a blend of driver-oriented canyon roads, urban segments certain to keep
navigators busy, and some of the most dazzling vistas that Southern California has to offer.
Run to the Santa Monica Sports Car Club’s First Friday Niter generals, The Spring Classic will be a
treat for veteran rallyists and novices alike.

Patrick Strong was the events Rally Master and we want to thank him for submitting the pictures and following write-up. For more information about the Santa Monica Sports Car Club and it’s rally activities (past, present and future), please visit their Facebook page.

The Spring Classic was my first attempt at writing a long-format, daytime rally (having written only a pair of 90-minute night rallies previously.)  I had three goals in mind in writing the Spring Classic:

1. I wanted to put on a rally that would be extremely beginner-friendly, as I think that the perception of our rallies as being “too hard” is keeping some would-be competitors away.  Consequently, I stuck to a “tour” format, as opposed to a “course” rally with a bunch of traps.

2. Since the name of our club includes the words “Sports Car,” I wanted to include roads that would tempt serious driving enthusiasts to come out to play.  So, the first part of the rally covered some popular canyon routes in the Santa Monica Mountains.

3. Our rallies tend to stay north of the Santa Monica Mountains; being a resident of South Bay, I wanted to design a course that showed contestants a part of L.A. County that they don’t typically encounter in our events.  Specifically, I wanted to run the rally through the Palos Verdes Peninsula for its gorgeous oceanside vistas and fun-to-drive roads.

The rally drew eleven entries, mostly local, but we did have a few national-level competitors come down from Northern California (and one from Arizona.)  The response was very positive; the selection of roads delivered on the promise of driving fun and great views.  If there was one common complaint, it was that the middle third of the rally (which linked the canyon segment to Palos Verdes via the traffic-and-stoplight infested Westside) was a bit tedious…it was slow, and the road conditions were pretty poor.)  In the future, I’ll work harder to write rallies that DO NOT have large urban sections

Wednesday’s Rally Eye Candy 5/23/12

This past weekend was a good weekend for RallyCross with many clubs hosting events.  Here’s what I have come across … so far.
