Wednesday’s Rally Eye Candy 5/16/12

Not a whole lot this week, but I did come across a couple cool videos.

This is a pretty cool video about understanding TSD Rallying. It was taken in India, but the basics are the same. I would be nice to see a professional quality video such as this made here in the U.S. that could be used to promote the sport. I would be nice if ‘said’ professional video was licensed so anyone could promote it and the sport …. *HINT* *HINT* SCCA.

Our second video today comes from the Wafl Racing who videoed one of their ice races during the Alcan 5000.

Cool Rally Car of the Week – 5/12/12

When I started this feature, I envisioned showing off our readers cars. But the feature hasn’t taken off enough yet or you are all shy about showing off your rally car … whether it be used for TSD’s, RallyCross and/or Stage Rally. Please send in your cars, we’d love to see them.

So I’ll take the opportunity to show off my first dedicated RallyCross car … a 1984 Ford Escort. I show off this car to demonstrate that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to be competitive in SCCA RallyCross. I won events in SF (stock front wheel drive) in this car.

I spent $300 to purchase the car, and probably put about a $1,000 into it over the time I RallyCrossed it. It had a 1.6L 4 cylinder motor putting out a whopping 70 hp when it was brand new. Momentum with a good set of snow tires was the key in this car. Especially if it was raining and the course was muddy. In these conditions I would often have better times than many of competitors in WRX’s.

I am actually sad that I sold this car.

How would you like YOUR CAR to be the “Cool Rally Car of the Week”!

“Cool Rally Car of the Week” is your chance to show off your Rally car. We are looking for your Stage Rally Car, RallyCross Car, Road Rally Car or your Vintage/Collector Car.

All we ask for submission is at least one picture of your cool car. Whether is be a $300 POS you love or a cherished high $ beauty (and everything in between; including project cars). If you wish to send additional pictures, videos, information about your car, yourself, how long you have been rallying, what types of rally you do, clubs which you belong, etc., that would be appreciated as well.

Email your picture(s) and/or video(s) to: editor@dirtyconesandcheckpoints.com (use the Subject Line: “Cool Rally Car of the Week”).

Should we not have any submissions for the week, I’ll find a cool car to use in the feature, but I would prefer to use readers cars for the feature.

Wednesday’s Rally Eye Candy 5/9/12 – Historic Rally Part Deux

Last week I got an email from Brian McMahon who offered up a vault of rally photos from the 1970′s in and around the Michigan area. I thought I would take him up on his offer since there is come really cool photos. Thank you Brian for your support! All photos are by Brian McMahon.

Editor Note: I planned on displaying more of Brian’s photos, but I ran out of time and need to get this published. Maybe we’ll get more out soon. Thank you again Brian for letting us show off some of your photos!

1971-72

You know with my fascination with the Mini’s that I have to throw one in.

 1973-74

1975-76

I love seeing some of these American Classics rallying, such as this Corvette …

This Camaro ….

And this Pinto … yes Pinto!

Cool Rally Car of the Week – 5/5/12

I have to apologize for our feature not being published yesterday, but I think I have a good excuse … I have been volunteering and spectating at the Oregon Trail Rally (Rally America).

This week’s car is a car I witnessed running the rally this weekend, which is quite rare here in the US. In fact it is the two cars of the Summit Innovations Rally Team (Australian), who have brought across the pond a couple of cars to run in the Rally America series. They are a 1989 and a 1991 Nissan Silvia S13.  Number 27 (1989) is driven by Will Orders with Toni Feaver co-driving and number 28 is driven by Ross Allan with Scott Allan co-driving. These two guys drove the hell out of these cars; quick and hanging it out for the fans enjoyment!

Wednesday’s Rally Eye Candy 5/2/12

I don’t have a lot to post this week, for I have been spending more time preparing to rally than viewing rally this week. I am sure you can relate and appreciate that. The Oregon Trail Rally is coming to town this week, so I am really excited to get out on the stages.

While I didn’t a chance to find much, I did find some Road Rally photos.

I came across the 2012 Snowball Rally from of all places “Bring a Trailer“. Bring A Trailer is a website that shares cars for sale from various sources around the web. The say of themselves, “Barn finds, rally cars and needles in the haystack …”. They had a bit of a write and a ton of photos from the event which features vintage cars on the back roads of California at http://bringatrailer.com/2012/04/29/2012-snowball-rally-day-2-the-dusty-mega-gallery-2/. Here is a sample and you can find the full set on their Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37210452@N06/sets/72157629923005385/with/6977629226/

I don’t like to post in-car videos to often, the tend to be a bit boring if that is all that it is; but I liked this video because of the included telemetry (I thought that was a nice touch) and I totally dig the idea of mixed surface events.
